3 states, 1 day.

Ethel Ray was born 17 days after Veramitch.
& she never forgets it.
Her birthday this year was during labor day weekend,
like usual.
The idea was in her head that Vera would most likely make a cake for her,
read a story to her,
while she ate the entire cake,
nothing to extravagant.

That was not on the agenda this go around.
We stayed home Saturday and some of Sunday.
When we were invited by our neighbors to do something crazy.
never experienced by us.
It required 4 hours of driving,
crossing 2 state lines,
& unpredictable weather.

We didn't need to be persuaded much.
We were obviously down.

So.
We got in good old Hub,
{Ethel Ray's Ghetto Jeep}
with Wilda & Melvertha
about to go on an adventure of our life in the state of
Wyoming.

The drive was grueling & boarder line terrifying
seeing as our guide was a rebellious driver & extremely hard to follow.
not to mention they were boys so they didn't need to use the restroom as frequently as us ladies.

Either way,
being in a car that long causes there to be enough sass to give an entire army.
so, when we arrived no one could stop our endless rambles.

It was dark by the time we got to the camp sight,
there was a quaint little fire on the river side with a rope swing waiting for us.
Perfect.

We didn't know half the people who were at the camp sight but let me tell you that they knew us about 5 seconds after being there.
We were screaming & hollering at the top of our lungs when the rope swing slipped out from under us, like it wanted us to fall into the river.
Everyone joined in & a good time was had by everyone.

When it was time to go to bed.
mattresses were brought down to the river side,
We thought it was going to be peaceful but half way through the night we swear death had a grasp on us.

Splashing & thumping,
Crunching leaves & loud footsteps,
It kept both of us awake.

Not sure who was above us on the mattresses we still held onto their feet as a sort of comfort to make it through the night.
We finally fell asleep & we were rudely awakened by a crack a thunder & lightening with a downpour of rain at 6 am.

Ah Yeah!
it was a mad run to shelter,
slipping & sliding in the mud trying to hold all of our things was a joke but it was accomplished.

We were definitely awake & would not be able to go to sleep again,
this is when Ethel's birthday surprise was announced.

RIVER RAFTING ON THE SNAKE RIVER.

Now,
from past experiences you all know how we are with water & rapids.
So, you could imagine our faces when they told us that we would be doing this activity.

Something like this.

We did it anyway.
We were equipped with swimsuits,
jumpers,
water shoes,
life jackets,
& of course party hats.

When we got to the launching dock the rain was worse than before.
Did that stop us??
ABSOLUTELY!
for like 10 minutes...
then we sucked it up & jumped in.

The rapids were fine & we were having a good time.
We were only scared a few times.
It was thrilling & we never wanted it to end!

About half way through the course they made us switch up the seating arrangements which put Ethel Ray on what is called,
"The Bull"
Which is the very front of the raft,
where your legs dangle off the front & all you have is a rope with a knot to hold onto.

Little did she know that this was the most intense part of the river.
So with her party hat securely fastened they headed to the Big Kahuna.
It didn't look bad from a distance, then it got closer.
Ethel Ray looked back at Veramitch who was in the back paddling.
The time for one of them to fall out was now,
they could feel it.

The drop happened,
they plunged into the water,
Ethel Ray flew back into the raft due to the force.
The raft completely submerged under the water & popped up with ease.

Everyone struggled to get up.
We looked around to find one another surprised to see that neither one of us fell out.
shocking.
Our dear friend Russell on the other hand popped out the side & was trying to get back to us.
Poor Russell.

The ride was over & we were exhausted.

while we waited for the truck to come get the raft we turned our raft into a slip'n'slide.
we made a lot of friends that way,
mostly children.

It was a good birthday.
